Kona Countdown 2012: Eight Weeks Out

I am excited to share some news with you guys–Leopard Trek has joined with me to create a video series about my buildup to the World Champs in Hawaii this year.  I will post a new video every week, showing you guys a bit of the behind-the-scenes story about what it takes to train and race in Kona.

In this week’s video, I am just wrapping up a training block and am completely exhausted–at the end of the day I really don’t have much left and tend to go to bed and boring hours like 9:30pm.  Living at high altitude in Nederland, CO  means that I need as much sleep as possible in order to recover from the brutal training days down in Boulder.

Starting today, I am also taking questions from my twitter followers about anything they would like to know regarding my Kona buildup.  Just address your tweets to @dirkbockel #KonaCountdown.  I will answer a new question each week!

  1. Thanks for taking the time to do the video to check in with your fans. It’s a really cool feature to keep in touch. Even got to see Todd on iphone. Good luck with training and can’t wait to follow you guys at Kona.

  2. Hi Dirk,

My question is regarding (pre-)race nutrition.
How do you prepare this critical aspect of Ironman racing, and how do you train for this ? Do you scientifically caclulate the calories you will need, and prepare for it during the sessions, or do you base on experience and on-the-day feeling ? Do you try at different intensities, or only during long runs/rides, etc ? Thanks for sharing. Yannick.
